The Greek National Anthem (Hymn to Liberty) was originally a poem written in 1823 by Dionysios Solomos. He wrote it to honor the struggle of Greeks for independence from Ottoman rule. In 1865, Nikolaos Chalikiopoulos Mantzaros set the poem to music with a version for the long poem and a shorter version for the first two stanzas.
