Greek Mythology: Melissani Cave and Lake

/home/greek/history/mythology/melissani-cave/

Lake Melissani, Kefalonia, GreeceReached by small boat through an underground tunnel, the Melissani Cave (Λίμνη Μελισσάνη) was supposedly named after the Nymph Melissani of Greek Mythology. She was in love with Pan, who paid her no attention, so she reported ended her life and fell into the lake below.

The lake underneath the cave was discovered by speleontologist Giannis Petrochilos in 1951. It is surrounded by forest and is difficult to see from above. Guided tours will take you there, and once inside, the morning sun will shine through to unveil stalactites and beautiful, crystal clear, blue-green water.

Watch the video below for a virtual tour of the cave and lake:

The island of Kefalonia has many opportunities for exploration and adventure with hiking, kayaking, jeep safaris, cave explorations, canyoning, and rappelling tours.
