Why Learn the Greek Language

Yes, the Greek language can be challenging to learn, especially for Westerners, since some of the characters of the alphabet are written and/or pronounced differently from the English language. So, why learn Greek?

Riddle

I will answer this question with a riddle.

Question: If people who know three languages are trilingual and people who know to two languages are bilingual, what are people who know only one language?

Answer: Americans!

Why? Because English is a universal language and we don't often see a reason to learn another one. Below are several reasons to learn the Greek language.

Family and Friends

Skyping with your yiayia (γιαγιά) in Greece is a good reason to learn Greek. She would be so proud of you! Maybe you made friends on a summer trip to Greece and you're now facebook friends. Chances are that their facebook and instagram posts will be in the Greek language. Wouldn't it be so much fun if you could read them and then respond in Greek.

Visiting Greece

With any country you visit, your trip will be more enjoyable if you know the language! You'll be able to read airline and bus schedules, order food in restaurants, and buy goods at any market with ease. Knowing the native language is the difference between being a traveler and being a tourist. Also, Greek villagers are known for their hospitality and friendliness. Wouldn't it be fun to talk with them about their lives and thank them with "ef-h-ari-sto" when you leave?

Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Art

Mathematics, science, engineering and other desciplines express concepts using characters from the Greek alphabet. Beta testing, alpha dog, Pi's 3.14159, The Delta Factor book and movie, and electrical ohms. Wikipedia has a comprehensive list.

Fraternities and Sororities

The fraternal and sororial systems in America use the Greek alphabet for their symbols. Every year, pledges are required to learn and recite the entire alphabet without assistance. We have online alphabet quizzes to help you master this requirement.

Ancient Greek Writers and New Testament

Wouldn't it be great to read Homer's epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey, in the original Greek language? Also, the New Testament was originally written in Greek. Being able to read Greek gives you insights that you will not find in translated works.
